The Difference Between Boudoir & EROTICA

When it comes to photographing boudoir, especially couples boudoir sessions, some people may get a bit confused on what this entails! We have had a few couples in the past who have asked to do things that are a bit spicier than we allow for boudoir that enters the erotic photography realm, so I hope that this blog helps state the differences and clear things up a bit.

Brii Camacho (badass babe and owner of The Boudoir Studio in Boone, NC) is an absolutely incredible Erotica photographer, and she was kind enough to answer some questions about Erotica and help explain the difference between the two! The photos in this blog are of Brii when we met up for a quick collab, but you can view some of her incredible work towards the end!

I guess the main question is- what’s the difference between boudoir and erotica? Where do you draw the line when talking about the two?

“So for me, the difference between Boudoir and Erotica is the actual photographing of genitals. With Boudoir, you don’t photograph straight on vagina or straight on penis. Some boudoir photographers may draw the line at photographing full nudity, but most boudoir photographers will photograph boobs. It’s when photographing other genitalia that you start entering into Erotica. For example, you won’t be photographing someone face-down-ass-up with your butthole visible for Boudoir- but you can for Erotica! Things like actual penetration (with a partner or a toy), as well as clitoral, penis, and other genital stimulation is considered Erotica.”

So then is Erotica geared towards more kink-friendly people? Or does it depend on the clients themselves?

“It really depends on the clients! Some people are completely vanilla, while others aren’t. It all depends on them, and we go over everything (boundaries, limits, kinks, etc.) beforehand. Everything we do for Erotica is built around what the client wants, just like Boudoir.”

Is there anything that you personally don’t photograph when it comes to Erotica?

For me personally, Erotica has no bounds except for safety. For example, you can't include suspension unless you prove to me that you have experience to execute it in a SAFE way. I also don’t allow piercing or blood play. Most erotic photographers will not photograph anything that actually includes actually hurting someone, so no knife play [bleeding or cutting] or breath play [choking/restricting airways]. I personally do not photograph feces or pee, for sanitary purposes it’s just not something I do. Some Erotica photographers will, though! Just make sure that it is previously discussed before your session.”

Since you are photographing actual sex acts, are there any special legal stipulations or considerations for erotic photography?

“There are definitely legal stipulations for Erotica that aren’t the same for Boudoir. There are different contracts, different questionnaires, and a few other things that my clients need to sign and say what they do or don’t agree with. It also varies by state and county whether it’s legal at all for you to photograph at all.”

What is your personal goal for Erotica VS your goal with Boudoir?

“My goal with Erotica is to capture intense and raw sexual chemistry, emotion, and connectivity- completely different from Boudoir. For Boudoir, I'm there to capture beauty and teach people to love their bodies. For couples Boudoir sessions it's still about connection and intimacy, just a bit more more cutesy and snuggly than it is about raw sexual intimate like connection. For Boudoir, I definitely focus more on building the emotional connection. With Erotica, it’s more based around sensuality and sex itself.”

Hype Girl Boudoir only photographs Boudoir, and our main goal is to help you fall in love with yourself and remind you of your feminine beauty and strength. While those same goals can be achieved during an Erotica session, I personally stick with Boudoir! Brii’s studio is located in Boone, North Carolina, and I would HIGHLY recommend checking her out if you are curious about erotica and exploring your sexuality!
